Even though the big social media companies *say* that our phones aren’t listening to us, it’s pretty obvious that they are – at least based on what we’ve seen and heard. You know how you talk about something and you get ads for it on your phone? Weird, right? You could probably explain it away and say you Googled it and then that’s how they know to give you ads for it, but what about when someone ELSE is talking about a product and then YOU get ads for it?
Bert Show cast members and listeners have been served ads based on stuff they talked about once, or stuff a family member or friend talked about on a phone call, or even stuff they’ve heard on Instagram! Maybe it’s coincidence, or maybe your phone is listening.
While it’s kind of creepy, Cassie has always actually found it super useful. It’s like someone doing a Google search for you and recommending a product you needed but maybe didn’t know about – she’s bought a lot of helpful stuff based off these ads. But there’s always “too far” in any situation and she just got an ad for something that did just that. It feels SUPER invasive and she thinks they need to draw the line somewhere, because this definitely crossed it.
