Disney+ is running a new, updated content warning before several titles that contain racist character portrayals.
It says, “This program includes negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures. These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now.
“Rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together.
“Disney is committed to creating stories with inspirational and aspirational themes that reflect the rich diversity of the human experience around the globe.”
The movies that carry this warning include:
“The Aristocats”…in which a very offensive Asian cat plays drums during the musical number “Everybody Wants to Be a Cat“.
“Peter Pan”…with its insensitive portrayal of “Native Americans“.
“Dumbo”…and its “black” crows.
And “Swiss Family Robinson” with its pirates in “yellow face” and “brown face”.
The warning also suggests that viewers visit a section of the Disney website called Stories Matter, which is dedicated to diversity and inclusion.
