In an interview yesterday on “Good Morning America”, Ashley Judd confirmed that her mom Naomi took her own life. She passed away on April 30th, but the family didn’t want to disclose the details at that time.
They chose Ashley to give the news. Here’s what she told Diane Sawyer, “I’m tasked [with] disclosing the manner of the way my mother chose not to continue to live. And I’ve thought about this so much because once I say it, it cannot be unsaid.
“Because we don’t want it to be a part of the gossip economy I’ll share that she used a weapon. Mother used a firearm. That’s the piece of information we’re very uncomfortable sharing, but [if] we don’t say it, someone else is going to.”
Even more heartbreaking, Ashley is the one who found her. “I went upstairs to let her know that a friend was there [to visit], and I discovered her. I have both grief and trauma from discovering her.”
Ashley describes how “the disease of mental illness” damaged her mom. “Her brain hurt. It physically hurt. Our mother couldn’t hang on until she was inducted into the [Country Music] Hall of Fame by her peers.
“That is the level of catastrophe of what was going on inside of her. [When] we’re talking about mental illness, it’s very important to make the distinction between our loved one and the disease. It’s very real, and it lies, it’s savage.”
Ashley is encouraging anyone in need of help to reach out to friends and family. And if necessary, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255…or visit SuicidePreventionLifeline.org.
