Imagine your spouse is so sick that all of your coworkers donate their vacation days just so you can spend time with your her. Now imagine that your job won’t allow you to spend those important, much-needed days with the love of our life because of policy issues.
David Johnson, the older brother of cancer survivor Hannah Rinehart, joins the show to talk about exactly that situation – it’s happening to his younger sister, Hannah, and her husband, Mark, who is a teacher.
About Hannah’ condition:
Although only 32, Hannah had undergone cancer treatments including chemotherapy, radiation, and two bone marrow transplants during her prior 7 year battle with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Hannah successfully won her battle against cancer in 2005.
In late June 2012, Hannah Rinehart developed a rare but serious infection that has caused her to spend several weeks in the ICU at Northside Hospital. The infection had spread through her bloodstream resulting in septic shock and multi-organ failure. As the days passed, it became apparent that there were problems with Hannah’s circulatory system.
In a matter of weeks, the tissue in her hands and feet began to deteriorate. A difficult decision had to be made. In order to preserve her life, doctors amputated Hannah’s hands and feet on Thursday, July 26, 2012.
Currently, Hannah is still in the ICU. Hannah is slowly recovering from her surgeries, although she is still in critical condition.
