Rise of the Planet of the Apes had a big opening weekend to knock The Smurfs out of the top spot. The James Franco action movie took in $54 million over the weekend to finish in first place. Last weekend’s number one The Smurfs fell to second with $21 million. And Cowboys & Aliens came in third with $15.7 million.
