The Emmy nominations for 2012 were released yesterday. As usual, HBO got the most nominations of any network, with 81. CBS got 60 nominations. And thanks to the Emmy voters’ scary obsession with “Downton Abbey,” PBS came in third with 58.
For the first time ever, there were no shows from broadcast networks nominated for Outstanding Drama Series. The six shows nominated are “Mad Men” and “Breaking Bad” from AMC, “Game of Thrones“ and “Boardwalk Empire“ from HBO, “Downton Abbey“ from PBS, and “Homeland“ from Showtime. Three broadcast shows were nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series, along with three HBO series. The broadcast shows are “Modern Family” from ABC, “Big Bang Theory” from CBS, and “30 Rock” from NBC.
The cable series nominated are “Veep”, “Curb Your Enthusiasm”, and “Girls” from HBO. For the first time since the category was created, “American Idol” was not nominated for Outstanding Reality-Competition Series. “The Voice” took its slot along with the other shows that get nominated every year. Those are “Dancing With the Stars”, “The Amazing Race”, “Project Runway”, “So You Think You Can Dance”, and “Top Chef”.
“Mad Men” and “American Horror Story” got the most nominations of any show, with 17 each. “American Horror Story” pulled that off by submitting as a miniseries rather than a drama.
“Downton Abbey” and the History Channel miniseries “Hatfields & McCoys” both got 16 nominations. “Modern Family” got the most of any comedy, with 14 nominations. “Homeland” got the most of any new show, with nine.
Jimmy Kimmel will host this year’s Emmys, which air live on September 23rd on ABC. Kimmel’s show “Jimmy Kimmel Live” got its first-ever nomination for Outstanding Variety Series this year, a category the “Daily Show” has won the last nine years in a row.
Yesterday morning, Kimmel also presented the nominations, along with Kerry Washington from “Scandal.” Kimmel wore pajamas, which he said were from the, quote, “husky baby collection.” He filled in at the last minute for Nick Offerman from “Parks and Recreation” who was stuck in New York because of the massive storm.
