The accounts of some users of business-networking site LinkedIn were compromised after a hacker posted the encrypted passwords of as many as 6.5 million users on the Internet.

LinkedIn members were swamped by e-mail from strangers urging them to click on links to verify their email addresses.

The company confirmed that the passwords were compromised and said it would send users of the affected accounts instructions on how to reset their passwords.

These instructions would not include directions to click any links.
